Digital Quran Standard

A shared technical framework defining what is required to preserve the integrity of Quran text from source to display, while giving developers requirements that can be implemented and tested.

Standard scope

What should it govern?

The following items are not presented as an approved standard. They are a proposed scope to be developed with reference, scholarly, and technical organizations.

Source and provenance

Define the reference copy, version, approval record, and associated update history.

Orthography and diacritics

Preserve Uthmani orthography, diacritics, pause marks, separators, verse numbering, and prostration markers.

Unicode encoding

Define characters, ordering, normalization, and comparison methods without damaging Quran-specific properties.

Rendering and fonts

Test across operating systems, devices, fonts, screen sizes, and writing directions.

Accessibility

Requirements for screen readers, magnification, contrast, navigation, and suitable alternatives.

Verification and releases

Digital fingerprints, conformance tests, and tagged versions that can be referenced reliably.

Development cycle

From draft to approval

The development process should be open to review and traceable, with a clear distinction between proposal, draft, and approved release.
